🗞️ Isma Makes the News: Nerdmigos Featured in VoyageLA Magazine
Ismael Alejandro Moreno Ozuna (IAMO), creator of Nerdmigos, was interviewed by VoyageLA Magazine for their Inspiring Stories series. The interview is now live.
If someone had told Isma back in 2009 that fifteen years later a Los Angeles magazine would want to tell his story, he probably would have kept drawing on copier paper and not believed a word of it. And yet, here we are.
VoyageLA Magazine, a publication dedicated to spotlighting independent artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs in the greater Los Angeles area and beyond, recently reached out to Ismael Alejandro Moreno Ozuna to feature him in their Inspiring Stories series: a collection of profiles about people who are building something meaningful on their own terms. Isma said yes, and the result is an honest, heartfelt, and yes, funny conversation about what it means to create from Tijuana, Mexico, without a safety net and without asking anyone's permission.
In the interview, Isma traces the origin of Nerdmigos back to 2009, when it launched as a webcomic drawn on copier paper, fueled by the stubborn belief that there was an audience for Mexican geek humor that nobody was serving well. Twelve years later, encouraged by his friend Adrián Zambrano, creator of the Valle de Cielo Gris podcast, he finally put a microphone on the table and turned the comic into a podcast. What started as comic strips became news, reviews, interviews, and the kind of enthusiastic overthinking that only happens when you genuinely love what you're talking about.
He also gets real about the challenges: doing absolutely everything himself (production, design, social media, the merch store, the website), balancing creative life with other commitments, and what it actually means to make Spanish-language content from the border in a media landscape that still revolves around LA and New York.
There's also room for the Sketchbook Club Tijuana, now celebrating 12 years of free monthly Drink & Draw meetups: a no-agenda, no-cover-charge space where local artists show up to draw and, sometimes, find their community. And for the 2026 Latin Podcast Awards nomination, the first in Nerdmigos history, with the ceremony taking place in Miami on October 12, 2026.
And yes, he also addresses the Disney Star Wars versus Lucas Star Wars situation. It had to be said.
